AGNES FLOOD DOCUMENTARY
The goal of the Agnes Flood Documentary Project is to produce a 60-90 minute documentary that will be considered the definitive film on the 1972 Agnes Flood and its impact on the Wyoming Valley. The film will accomplish this goal by combining Agnes-related material from various sources, including:
- 1) Actual news archives from the ABC, NBC and CBS evening news which show how the Agnes disaster in the Wyoming Valley was covered nationally. This footage has not been seen in nearly 50 years, but producers of the film have already acquired most of it.
- 2) The best photos from the four Agnes commemorative books that were published in the 1970s. These books are long out of print, but some of the photos are remarkable and quite moving.
- 3) News footage from local TV stations, including WNEP-TV, WBRE-TV, WVIA-TV and the former WDAU-TV.
- 4) Excerpts from the book "Appointment With Disaster: The Swelling of The Flood," the definitive text on the Agnes flooding of the Wyoming Valley.
- 5) Local radio broadcasts that aired during Agnes. (WARM radio.)
- 6) Personal photographs and home movies of Agnes from residents of the Wyoming Valley.
- 7) Newspapers that were published during and following Agnes.
- 8) Timepiece references to pop culture, including music, film and television.
All of this material is available, but unfortunately, it has never been pulled together into one place. That is the goal of this project. Equally important is the desire to show the resiliency and the spirit of the people of the Wyoming Valley and how they worked together to overcome what at the time was the greatest natural disaster in the history of the United States. It is hoped that the film will serve as an educational tool for generations to come and as a definitive historical reference.
